Art and craft in two West Dorset gardens

We're celebrating Dorset Arts Week with a visit to two seldom-open private gardens in the west of the county. This is a rare opportunity to join a personally-guided tour of Farrs, the home and garden of renowned furniture designer John Makepeace followed by a specially arranged visit to the magical and much-admired garden of the late painter John Hubbard (1931-2017) at Chilcombe House

The day starts at Farrs, where John and his wife Jenny will give us a tour of their two distinctively different - and separate - gardens, then coffee and conversation, with a talk from John about his life in wood and furniture design. Lunch at a local restaurant, then on to Chilcombe House. John Hubbard and his wife lived here for 30 years and were well known and loved in the locality. We'll walk around the garden and hear something about how it developed from the gardener there. Hubbard was an abstract impressionist painter, whose work is deeply imbued with a love of the English landscape in its varied moods. Chilcombe is now owned by the Hubbard estate and there will be a chance to view some of the paintings on show in the house.

The tour starts and ends at Crewkerne station. Travel between the station and gardens will be by coach.

10.48am Meet coach at Crewkerne Station. 16.30 Depart gardens for Station. (Based on trains from London & Bristol).

Further details to be confirmed
